Many different types of maps are used to assist City staff with a wide variety of business functions from Emergency Operations Center support to park planning. A few examples are represented in the 'City Maps Collection' links on the left of your screen.

Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information Systems are computer systems that capture, store, check, integrate, manipulate, analyze and display data related to a position on the Earth's surface. Maps can and are regularly produced from Geographic Information Systems but they can also be much more.

Hidden in most data is a geographical component: an address, postal code, census block, city, county, or latitude/longitude coordinate.

How are Geographic Information Systems used at the City?

GIS is an enabling technology that is used to facilitate a variety of business functions in the City. Below are just a few examples:
